Synergize!

The aroma from a single essential oil is a very individualized experience.  This is largely due to the fact that our sense of smell creates associations that can be thought of as good or bad.   These associations create a powerful positive or negative reaction.  Memories may be the catalyst to your discovery because memories and smell have such a close relationship to one another.  For me, the gardenia is what heaven must smell like.  I associate the scent of gardenia with wonderful childhood memories and can feel the endorphin rush kick in with just one wiff of the fragrant flower.  Likewise, you too may have a reaction to a scent that you (positively or negatively) associate with a feeling or memory.

Mental stability has an astounding effect on the type of aroma a person is attracted to.  Vetiver is an essential oil that produces a natural grounding effect and can be attractive to a person who suffers from anxiety.  The essential oil, Clary Sage, helps with hormone imbalance to improve mood.  A 2014  study published in the Journal of Phytotherapy Research found that inhalation of clary sage had the ability to reduce cortisol levels by 36% and improved thyroid hormone levels (TSH).   Amazing, right?

Lastly, people have a natural and magnetic inclination for a particular smell.  Men tend to like woodsy notes.  Women tend to enjoy light and floral scents.   Some like citrus as a source of invigoration, while others enjoy vanilla and lavender as endorphins are produced.

Try my calming synergy of frankincense and bergamot recipe:

Supplies:  Cotton ball or inhaler

Ingredients:  2 drops frankincense, 4 drops bergamot

Mix the oils together, then submerge the cotton (from the inhaler or cotton ball) to soak up the synergy.  Try this when feeling anxious.  Hold the cotton ball or inhaler up to one nostril, while closing the other nostril and take a deep breath for a count of 3 to 4 seconds.  Exhale.  Repeat 2 more times on the same nostril.  Switch to the other nostril, close the nostril you just used, hold the cotton ball or inhaler to the nostril opening and take a deep breath for a count of 3 to 4 seconds.  Exhale.  Repeat 2 more times on this nostril.
